Andy Perkins: A Life Well-Built

Andy Perkins is the epitome of job satisfaction, a true testament to finding joy in one’s career. As a builder and bricklayer by trade, Andy has embraced every aspect of his professional journey with enthusiasm and dedication.

A Career Built on Solid Foundations

Andy’s career in construction began with working on the build of Castle Hill Hospital and working as a Civil engineering supervisor for Hodgson’s Chemicals in Beverley. In 2002, he joined Hull City Council, where he oversaw the construction of 65 council properties for elderly and vulnerable customers. Working on various F10 contracts city wide.

KWL: A New Chapter

In 2007, Andy moved to KWL, where he took charge of large-scale contracts. These projects, require notification to the Health and Safety Executive due to their size and scope, typically lasting more than 30 working days and involving over 20 workers on site. One major project with KWL came during the 2007 floods, where he led the full refurbishment of the flooded Woodford Leisure Centre and many flooded buildings and properties. Andy’s portfolio expanded to include school extensions, sports centres, and libraries around Hull.

Current Role and Responsibilities

As a senior contracts manager at KWL, Andy oversees a diverse portfolio of significant projects. One of his current responsibilities is working with Jack Simpkin, managing the construction of new homes by KWL Homes in East Hull. This development, known as Matheson Close, is located next to Sutton Golf Course and features 27 contemporary homes with 2, 3, and 4 bedrooms. The project aims to create a vibrant community with stylish, modern living spaces designed to suit various lifestyles.

In addition to this housing development, Andy is responsible for overseeing structural property repairs and specialist works across the city. He also manages the parks and bridges contract in collaboration with Alan Bourne, which involves maintaining and improving public spaces. Furthermore, Andy’s role includes handling issues related to vandalism, coordinating engineering works, and overseeing various refurbishment projects, demonstrating the wide-ranging scope of his responsibilities at KWL.

A Passion for the Craft

“I’ve always loved building, construction, contracting and working outside,” Andy shares. His dedication to the trade is evident in his reluctance to fully retire, even as he approaches he celebrates his 62nd birthday. ”KWL is a really good career choice, we work on some great projects, it’s also local work which makes such a difference to our team, especially when bringing up a young family. Working locally means we can be around,” he adds.

Work-Life Balance

Beyond his professional life, Andy enjoys a rich and fulfilling personal life. He loves taking holidays in the Canaries with his wife, who has recently semi-retired, allowing them to spend more quality time together. In his free time, Andy has been restoring Lambrettas since he was 17, a hobby that has brought him joy over the years. He also enjoys riding his Triumph Thunderbird motorcycle, which provides him with a sense of freedom and adventure. Additionally, Andy is passionate about music, playing the guitar and writing songs about a wide range of topics. “I write about anything that is in my head, including the weather,” he says, “I do love it when the sun shines.”

A Life Well-Built

Andy’s story is one of contentment and achievement. “Now that my family is grown up and I have time to please myself, I feel like I’ve really cracked it,” he reflects. His happiness in his work at KWL, combined with his fulfilling personal life, makes him an inspiration to those seeking fulfilment in their careers and personal lives.
