Mark Smith

What did you do before joining KWL?

I have over 25 years’ experience working in the social housing maintenance sector, originally starting as a joiner with my local authority.

I also worked at a senior level for three of the leading national contractors within our sector, including in Sheffield where I oversaw the responsive maintenance service for over 60,000 homes.

I use the experience I’ve gained to help improve on the already high level of service that KWL currently provides.

How long have you worked for KWL?

I joined KWL at the beginning of August 2016.

What’s your role at KWL?

My role is mainly the strategic management of the responsive maintenance and voids services.

A large part of my job is reviewing how we deliver our services to ensure we continue to provide an affordable, best-in-class service for the people of Hull.

I’m also heavily involved in developing new external business opportunities that will help strengthen KWL across both the city and the region.

What do you enjoy the most about working at KWL?

The people. Everyone I’ve met is very positive and, regardless of the challenges we experience, believe in KWL and what we’re looking to accomplish as a business.

I also enjoy how varied and busy the role is. By the definition of responsive repairs, we have to be flexible and reactive to the demands placed on the team, usually to tight deadlines.

What advice would you give to young people who want a job like yours?

Be proactive. Push yourself forward and make yourself noticed.

There are many opportunities that will present themselves to you over the years, from training courses to secondments or promotions. By having the drive and confidence to take them on, there should be no barrier to reaching success.
