What did you do before working at KWL?
After leaving school, I came straight into working for the council’s apprentice training scheme as a bricklayer apprentice. I was then encouraged to progress my career by returning to college where I gained an HNC in Construction.
How long have you worked at KWL?
I transferred to KWL from Hull CC Building Services in 2007, so I’ve been working for KWL since the start.
What’s your role at KWL? And what does it involve?
I’m looking after the delivery of the empty property programme.
This mainly involves returning long-term empty properties, some of which have been empty for 10 years, back to the high standards that we provide and the client expects ready for customers to move into.
I’ve also been involved in refurbishment projects and the conversion of several building into flats and apartments recently.
Working closely with other KWL employees is an important part of my job. This can involve anything from issuing work to joiners, to co-ordinating work between different departments on jobs such as re-wiring and central heating.
What do you enjoy most about working at KWL?
My experience of working with different departments and individuals within KWL has always shown me that there’s a real sense of teamwork, supported by highly skilled people, who are happy to help.
It’s important for me to get on with people who I work with and I’ve found that any problems or issues that arise are dealt with by everyone.
This makes you proud to be part of a team that involves, not only colleagues, but people who you class as friends.
What advice would you give to young people who want a job like yours?
If you’re the type of person who thrives in a challenging but rewarding environment, then it’s the dream job.
You’ll become part of a talented, passionate team of people committed to providing the best service to customers and the public.
Training and personal development have always been important to me, and in my experience, just as important to KWL.
