A Career Built on Apprenticeship, Growth, and Job Security at KWL

Andy Gagg was part of KWL’s first apprentice cohort when the business was established in 2007.

Leaving school that year, Andy applied to JTL for an electrical apprenticeship, which combined four years of on-the-job experience with one day a week at college. His hard work and dedication quickly earned him recognition, including a nomination for Best Electrical Apprentice at JTL’s Yorkshire & Humberside Regional Awards in 2011 – an event held at the Royal Armouries in Leeds.

Brothers Work Together at KWL

As the first in his family to enter the trades, Andy opened the door for his younger brother, Danny, who also completed his apprenticeship at KWL. “He saw I had a good opportunity at KWL and wanted to work through the same path,” Andy recalls.

After several years working directly on electrical installations, Andy transitioned into a development role in 2013, moving off his tools to join the office as a Supervisor in training. Eager to broaden his experience, Andy embraced new challenges in the commercial department, learning project management and estimation skills. “The development role involves shadowing supervisors to find out if you like the environment; supervising people isn’t for everyone, but I enjoyed estimating and getting involved with the running of projects. It was a whole new challenge for me.” This opportunity then became permanent in 2014 and during a 7-year period his commitment and capabilities led to a promotion in 2021 to Senior Supervisor.

Commercial Projects

Andy now oversees a wide range of projects, including large-scale upgrades like the Hull Central Library lighting revamp, Christmas light installations, and electrical inspection testing & repairs across Hull City Councils commercial properties, such as The Guildhall, leisure and community centres. His role is busy and varied, involving pricing work, supporting operatives on site, conducting health and safety inspections, and quality checks.

Committed to continual learning, Andy recently completed a NEBOSH Health & safety Qualification and Chartered Management Level 3, alongside other electrical qualifications and relevant training in areas like working at height, asbestos, EV Charging, solar PV, and emergency first aid.

“KWL is a Brilliant Employer”

Reflecting on his 18 years with KWL, Andy speaks highly of the company’s support, excellent benefits, and strong job security. “KWL is a brilliant employer. Over the years, they’ve always supported me, giving me confidence and stability in my career, which is incredibly important.”

He also enjoys mentoring two current apprentices, offering guidance both on college studies and any questions they may have within the workplace. “If they have any problems they can just call me, and we can talk it through.”

Currently, he is overseeing electrical support for Hull Fair, where a dedicated team ensures smooth running of services for vendors. He’s also preparing for the upcoming Christmas light switch-on event on 20th November.

Andy is proud to see the trades becoming more inclusive, with more young women joining the field. He advocates for the trade profession as a great career choice for young people, with the added benefit of working close to home through KWL.

Outside of work, Andy enjoys spending time with his young family, playing golf, and following Manchester United.

Andy’s story is one of steadfast growth, community, and pride in both his trade and workplace – a true testament to the opportunities, support, and job security available through apprenticeship and ongoing development at KWL.
