As a Dubliner, Councillor Byrne’s connection with Hull dates back to his teens, establishing roots in the city through family connections and early involvement in creative and entrepreneurial projects. He has a long history of leading community initiatives aimed at supporting young people and helping them transform ideas into viable businesses and events.
Councillor Byrne said: “As a ward councillor, I am motivated to contribute to Hull’s growth by integrating community-driven solutions and supporting opportunities that strengthen our city’s future. KWL as a local employer and leader in the construction sector, does precisely this and through exciting new-homes projects we are not just enhancing council properties, we are also building homes for local people to buy and bring up families.”

Among his notable achievements is the development of a 22,000 square foot community space in Hull’s city centre, previously the BBC recording studios, which he used to create social enterprise activities supporting young creatives. The model offered rent-free retail space to local talent, encouraging entrepreneurship and community growth.
Facing funding limitations, Garreth transitioned into local politics to influence broader change. Now serving as a councillor and a member of the Planning Committee, Councillor Byrne combines his knowledge of community needs and building trades to support KWL’s initiatives focused on housing, employment, and social development within Hull.
Interim Chief Executive, Roger Grannon says: “Garreth is in a prime position to be able to influence the future of KWL’s growth and our positive impact in Hull. We look forward to benefitting from the opportunities that can be generated through his input to the business.”
