Darren Nicholson

Where are you from?

I grew up in Bradford and moved to Hull when I was 19 to attend university and have been here ever since.

How long have you worked for KWL?

I joined KWL in July 2016.

What did you do before working at KWL?

I started out in audit for the public sector. Then I moved to PricewaterhouseCoopers, doing corporate tax and advisory work, and then on to Portakabin in York as their Financial Accountant. Following that, I joined JZ Flowers in East Yorkshire.

What’s your role at KWL?

During my career I’ve seen how many companies operate, so I have a wide variety of knowledge of different sectors.

My experience means that I get involved in, or run ‘unusual’ aspects, as I’ve always been very operationally and commercially focussed. This includes:

1. People management

2. Staff training & development

3. Implementation of a full MRP system for ordering, stock control, planning, sales and finance

4. IT server & network improvements and replacements (hardware and software)

5. Business relocations and takeovers

6. Implementation of digital document management software and business growth and development (new initiatives, change management, budgetary controls and new technology)

There are so many areas of opportunity within the company where we can seek to continue to advance the abilities of individuals, improve systems of operation and further promote the use of technology internally. All of which will help us to continue to provide the client and the community with quality service.

I personally like gaining involvement in all areas, starting from a detailed level right through to the more strategic planning aspects, because eventually everything is interlinked in some form.

What do you enjoy the most about working at KWL?

Working with the people around me and offering my insights and experience to encourage them to challenge themselves, others and the adopted ways of working.

Then taking action to positively change the things that are within our control for the better, which makes everyone involved feel that they have achieved something worthwhile and made a difference.

What qualifications have you achieved?

I have a BA (Hons) in Accountancy and Finance and I am a qualified certified accountant (ACCA).

What advice would you give to young people who want a job like yours?

With dedication, hard work and a touch of ability, anything is possible. If you set your sights on what you want to achieve in life and remain focussed, then you will get there.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help and pay high regard to the relationships you build with those around you.

I’ve certainly learned that the more time and energy you invest in something, the greater the likelihood that you’ll achieve something to be proud of.
