From Apprentice to Operations Manager

Perseverance

In a testament to perseverance and the power of nurturing talent, Jon Usher has recently ascended to the role of Operations Manager at KWL, to work alongside Tony Beck and Chris Dearing. Jon’s remarkable journey from an apprentice decorator to a key leadership position exemplifies the opportunities for growth and development within the company.

Apprentice

Jon embarked on his career as an apprentice decorator with Hull City Council. This early experience laid the foundation for a career that would span decades and see him rise through the ranks at KWL. Throughout, Jon has consistently demonstrated his skills and commitment, progressing from a skilled decorator to various managerial positions, culminating in his recent promotion to Operations Manager in September 2023.

In his new role, Jon oversees a diverse range of departments, including internal and external planned works, adaptations, and new to Jon, the mechanical and electrical compliance division. Despite the challenges of managing unfamiliar territories, Jon has embraced his expanded responsibilities with enthusiasm and aptitude, quickly adapting to the demands of his position.

Managing a team of 25+

The scope of Jon’s impact in his new role is substantial. He now manages a team of 25 office-based staff and numerous on-site operatives, overseeing approximately £25 million worth of work annually. His responsibilities extend to repairing and painting 4,500-6,000 properties per year, in addition to supervising the admin team for planned works.

One aspect of the role that has pleasantly surprised Jon is the mentorship component. As a senior staff member, he finds himself providing guidance and support to colleagues, managing not just tasks but also emotions and wellbeing. This human element adds a rewarding dimension to his work, allowing him to make a difference beyond the technical aspects of the job.

Roger Grannon, Chief Operations Officer says: “Jon has secured promotion at a time when the business is rapidly expanding and diversifying. I’m sure he will rise to the challenges and help to shape a positive future for KWL.”

Jon’s promotion has also brought him into the realm of high-level decision-making. He now actively participates in strategic discussions, working on budgets and contributing to the company’s future direction. This involvement has deepened his understanding of the broader financial impact of decisions, adding a new layer of complexity and satisfaction to his role.

Drawing from his own experience, Jon has been instrumental in shaping KWL’s apprenticeship programme. He worked closely with local training providers to ensure that the apprenticeship schemes meet KWL’s needs, driven by a passion to provide opportunities similar to those he benefited from early in his career.

Employee Development

Jon Usher’s journey highlights KWL’s commitment to employee development. The company supports lifelong careers within the business, encourages movement across different departments, and provides ample training and development opportunities. This culture of internal promotion and growth has not only benefited Jon but continues to inspire others at KWL.

Tony Beck, was previously Jon’s manager, now they are both Operations Managers. He says: “Over 11 years, I’ve witnessed Jon’s growth as a manager at KWL. Jon has supported me through difficult times, and I hope I’ve done the same. His leadership has been crucial in the Planned Works section’s success. As KWL enters a new era with fresh challenges, I’m proud that Jon has secured the Operations Manager position. It’s a natural progression given his deep understanding of the business. While I’ll remain a sounding board, Jon has the experience to excel in his new senior role.”

New Sense of Purpose

As Jon settles into his new office, away from the main floor, he reflects on how quickly the days fly by. While he has always enjoyed coming to work, he now feels a sense of purpose that surpasses his previous roles. His story continues to be a shining example of what can be achieved through hard work, dedication, and a company that values and nurtures its employees.

Jon Usher’s progression from apprentice decorator to Operations Manager is more than just a personal success story; it’s a beacon of inspiration for all at KWL, demonstrating that with the right support and determination, a fulfilling, lifelong career is not just possible but encouraged within the organisation.
