From Creative Writing to Contract Assistant – Finding the Perfect Fit at KWL

When Dan joined KWL just over a month ago as a Contract Assistant in the Gas Department, he quickly discovered that this was more than just a job – it was a team where communication, support, and pride can help the City come together every day.

“I mainly help allocate the work of our gas engineers,” Dan explains. “It’s all about balancing the jobs, matching each engineer’s skills to the right task and area, and most importantly, keeping our tenants happy.”

Before joining KWL, Dan worked in customer service and sales while studying for his Master’s in Advertising and Marketing at the University of Hull. He also holds an undergraduate degree in Creative Writing and English, which fed his early passion for communication.

“Working here has really boosted my communication skills. In my last role, it was all scripted and sales-driven – but at KWL, it’s about genuine customer service. You’re talking to real people all day, and that’s what I enjoy most.”

Dan was born and raised in East Hull, attending local schools and studying at the University of Hull as a mature student, after an earlier career as a car sprayer. His roots in the city make his connection to KWL’s community focus even stronger.

“KWL’s got big roots in Hull, and that means a lot to me because it’s home. The company’s culture is brilliant – everyone’s so welcoming and helpful. Even though I’ve only been here a short time, I already feel settled.”

Training and development were key reasons Dan wanted to join KWL, and he’s already seen how the company supports career growth.

“You can progress through the grades or move into other departments. KWL always advertises roles internally, so if you want to grow your career, they’ll back you every step of the way.”

Outside of work, Dan describes himself as a massive rugby fan, a dog lover, and a family-and-friends type of guy. His black Labrador, Vinnie, keeps him on his toes – especially during long walks around East Hull.

Looking ahead, Dan’s set his sights on learning to drive – a goal that will help him meet even more tenants and clients across the city. “I’d love to get out there more and see the people we help every day. That’s what this job is all about – making sure the tenants are happy and the engineers can do what they do best.”

Dan’s enthusiasm, local pride, and people-first attitude make him a perfect example of the values that make KWL such a rewarding place to work.
