From Rugby Fields to Construction Sites – Charlie Goodman

At KWL, we’re always excited to share the diverse stories of our apprentices.

Charlie Goodman is a young talent who traded his rugby boots for a hard hat and found his calling in the construction industry.

A Change of Plans

Charlie possesses a vital life skill: adaptability coupled with a very positive attitude. Once on a rugby scholarship with the promise of a career in Australia, Charlie’s plans were derailed by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, he didn’t let this setback discourage him. “Although I enjoyed rugby at the time, I wasn’t too disappointed to leave the game,” Charlie reflects.

Finding His Path

After school, Charlie initially set out to be a joiner but discovered his true passion during his time at Hull College. He switched to bricklaying, a trade that offers excellent opportunities both in the UK and around the world. This decision led him to KWL, where he’s now thriving as a ground worker on our apprenticeship scheme. This year, the scheme is supporting 14 talented apprentices across various trades, with Quantity Surveyor and Ground Worker being two new roles introduced for the first time.

Life at KWL

Charlie’s role at KWL is physically demanding, but he thrives on the challenge. “The job is very physical,” he explains. “Digging out footings, concreting for bricklayers, block and beam work, and putting scaffolding mats in.” He’s outside all the time and thoroughly enjoys the manual side of the job.

His positive attitude extends to all aspects of his work. “I don’t even complain about working in the rain,” he adds. Charlie has embraced the opportunity to learn, completing safety training and manual handling techniques to ensure he can perform his job efficiently and safely.

Learning and Growing

Charlie’s enthusiasm for learning is evident in his approach to work and training. “I attend college on North Bransholme, which is set out like a site. There are some opportunities to do bricklaying too.” This hands-on approach to education complements his practical experience at KWL, providing a well-rounded foundation for his career in construction.

Life Beyond Work

Outside of work, Charlie has found a new passion in snooker. “In my spare time, I play snooker at Tradewell Snooker Club in Hull,” he says. “I’ve just spent £200 on a snooker cue and I love it.” This hobby provides a perfect balance to his physically demanding job.

Charlie also recently passed his driving test, adding another skill to his growing repertoire and increasing his independence.

The Right Fit

Charlie’s background in rugby has prepared him well for the physical demands of his current role. “The job is very tiring, but I enjoy that,” he notes. This positive attitude and physical resilience make him a valuable asset to the KWL team.

Looking Ahead

Charlie’s journey from aspiring rugby player to ground worker at KWL is a prime example of how adaptability and a positive attitude can lead to unexpected and rewarding career paths. His story highlights the diverse opportunities available in the construction industry and the importance of being open to new experiences.

At KWL, we’re proud to support young talents like Charlie as they build their careers and contribute to the growth of our company and the wider construction industry. We look forward to seeing Charlie’s continued growth and success in his role at KWL.
