Helping to deliver home adaptations that make a real difference to tenants’ lives

We’re pleased to introduce Luke Coxon, who recently joined KWL as an Adaptations Supervisor, helping to deliver home adaptations that make a real difference to tenants’ lives.

Luke first joined KWL as a tradesperson, spending three years “on the tools” working on kitchens, adaptations, bathrooms and pre‑paint work. He explains: “After running my own successful Tiling business, I chose to return to KWL for a more stable routine that worked better for my family life. Having two young children, I am grateful to be able to finish at a reasonable time and have evenings and holidays that aren’t consumed by quoting and paperwork.”

Back at KWL, Luke initially returned to site work before stepping into the office last year. He’s now passed his six‑month probation as a Adaptations Supervisor and is thriving in a role that combines technical knowledge with organising complex, life‑changing jobs.

What Luke’s role involves

Luke oversees home adaptations commissioned by Hull City Council: “We do everything from wet rooms and level‑access showers to external ramps, widened doorways, and full house alterations to make properties wheelchair‑friendly and safe for people with disabilities and the elderly.”

He manages three in‑house adaptations teams and several  external contractors, booking work, visiting tenants and checking jobs at completion. The volume of work has grown significantly, with around 30 jobs a week going through contractors alone. That increase means more people are getting the homes they need faster, and Luke is already seeing shorter waiting times for tenants who have often been waiting a long time for adaptations.

Luke also works closely with colleagues like the Customer Liaison Officers to support tenants throughout the process, ensuring that jobs are completed to a high standard and that homes truly meet people’s needs.

Learning on the job

A qualified bricklayer by trade, Luke has built up a broad skill set across many aspects of construction. He believes strongly in learning on the job and has always been keen to pick up new skills, whether in construction or during his three‑year stint in engineering, where he worked on caravan chassis and quality control.

“When I moved into the supervisor role, I had to “jump in at the deep end” due to limited shadowing opportunities, but that challenge has accelerated my development. I’m proud of the positive feedback from my manager, Lee Clark and feel confident in the way I manage the responsibility and workload.”

Ambition and appreciation for KWL

Originally from Bransholme and now living in East Hull, Luke knows Hull and its communities well. He enjoys the mix of office and site work and the chance to see first‑hand how adaptations improve people’s daily lives – from older tenants to families with disabled children.

Looking ahead, Luke is ambitious but grounded. He’s happy where he is and focused on continuing to do the job well, while keeping an open mind about stepping up to senior supervisor level in the future when the time is right.

Luke is also quick to highlight the benefits of working for KWL – from the stability compared with self‑employment to the support available, including health initiatives. “KWL offers a strong working environment and that simply isn’t available to anyone who is self-employed.”
