Inspiring the Next Generation of Apprentices at KWL

Jon Usher stands as a testament to a lifelong career at KWL

Having started as an apprentice working with Hull City Council, Jon is from West Hull. His career began as a skilled decorator and he has climbed the ranks at KWL to become a Manager.

“Throughout the years, I’ve undergone extensive training with KWL and now I’m giving back to support KWL’s Apprenticeship Scheme, which continues to gain popularity each year.”

Jon works closely with the local training providers to ensure that the apprenticeship schemes meet the needs of KWL’s apprentices. His passion for the initiative stems from his own life-long benefits gained through a similar start.

“When assessing potential apprentices, I look for a positive attitude. Some young individuals already have a clear idea of their career path, and during our annual Apprentice Open Day, we confirm their aspirations. This event takes place in March and is always very popular, places quickly fill after we announce it on social media as KWL is well-known as an excellent employer. The day allows young people to visit our site, interact with the team, and gain insights into an average working day.

“KWL Apprentices receive a wage above the average apprentice level. Those who have passed their driving tests even get their own vans, offering a genuine sense of freedom.”

KWL welcomes between 10-13 apprentices annually

Covering various roles including administration, electrical, fleet/plant engineering, joinery, plastering/tiling, and plumbing/gas engineering.

“We attract a diverse range of young people, from avid gamers to those passionate about team sports. Those who often stand out have spent time at college already, had a change of heart, and become more mature with an extra year out of school. This additional time and experience can be helpful to young people. I like to impress that this is a good thing, rather than feeling they have wasted time by making a mistake.”

If you’re willing to step forward and put in the effort, you receive it back one hundred percent

“I’ve always enjoyed working at KWL. In my line of work, every project contributes to improving people’s lives, as I focus on adaptations to make someone’s living space align with their needs.

“The construction industry is known for its fluctuations, posing financial challenges for tradespeople. However, KWL stands out due to the stability it offers. Our projects endure; for instance, the roof replacement scheme will span approximately three years. This stability, combined with competitive salaries, empowers local individuals to move forward with their lives.”

In his leisure time, Jon enjoys playing darts and snooker, actively participating in his sons’ football training and matches on weekends.
