KWL Celebrates New Apprentice Cohort and the Remarkable Milestone of 200 Apprentices

In a proud celebration of talent, dedication, and community spirit, KWL welcomed 14 new apprentices at this year’s inspiring apprenticeship presentation evening. This milestone event also marks a remarkable achievement for KWL – surpassing 200 apprentices recruited since the firm was established in 2007, across KWL, including KWL Fleet based on Stockholm Road.

This 2025 cohort embarks on an exciting journey, gaining invaluable hands-on experience across a range of trades and services. From electrical work and plastering to groundwork, customer service, business administration, plumbing, storekeeping, joinery, and multi-skills, these apprentices represent the dynamic future meeting the demands of the construction industry.

A shining example of the programme’s success is Andy Gagg, Senior Electrical Supervisor and a celebrated member of KWL’s first-ever apprentice intake. Since joining as a school leaver in 2007, Andy’s journey has been one of passion, perseverance, and accomplishment. Today, he leads significant projects such as the Hull Central Library lighting overhaul, Hull’s festive Christmas lights display, and critical electrical support for Hull Fair.

Andy Gagg says, “KWL is a brilliant employer. Over the years, they’ve always supported me, giving me confidence and stability in my career, which is incredibly important. I also enjoy mentoring apprentices to give back.”

Roger Grannon, Interim CEO of KWL, who himself began working life as an apprentice, expressed pride in the company’s continued success: “This year’s new apprentices embody the passion and promise that drives our company forward. Apprenticeships are not just pathways to skilled jobs; they are lifelines for personal growth, community development, and the future vitality of the city.

“Andy’s story is a shining example of how commitment, combined with KWL’s nurturing environment, can transform lives. We are committed to supporting career progression, inclusivity, and a secure, supportive workplace where every individual can thrive.

“I am proud to see the job roles expanding – KWL offers young people opportunities in traditional trades, as well as vehicle technician roles within KWL Fleet, plus quantity surveying, storekeeping, and groundwork roles. KWL is also very proud to have recruited 22 female apprentices to construction roles, following a successful campaign to encourage young women into the sector.”

The KWL apprenticeship programme has built not only skilled people, but confident, capable individuals ready for lifelong success. This fresh cohort reaffirms KWL’s commitment to training, mentorship, and creating a stronger, more inclusive sector for tomorrow.
