Local orchard benefits from the fruits of labour!

KWL has donated and planted trees on behalf of the Friends of Constable Street Field.

The playing field is home to Constable Street allotments, a children’s play area and the orchard which bears fruit and nuts for local residents to pick and eat.

Our operatives have been planting new trees, adding new life to complement some mature trees already in situ.

Local residents can help themselves, a nostalgic activity for the warmer months to come.

Friends of Constable Street Field was established as a group to help maintain, develop and improve the area for the benefit of the local community and beyond.

The group works with fellow residents, local community and environmental groups, businesses and anyone who has an interest to improve and create a clean and safe environment for residents and wildlife to enjoy.

The field itself is situated between Constable Street and Wellsted Street off Hessle Road.

Residents have seen first-hand how the orchard has created a stronger sense of community over the years.

Lausanne Tranter, from Friends of Constable Street Field said:

“Our allotment has been a great success over the years, bringing the community closer together and giving us a shared sense of purpose, even more so recently through these challenging times.

“We think it’s important that people have somewhere nice that they can gather in the area.

“The fruit is available for locals to pick whenever they like and it’s available for everyone. We really feel our little space brightens up the area, especially when the blossoms come out in the spring.”

Roger Grannon, Chief Operations Officer at KWL said:

“Watching the trees flourish and creating their fruit is a satisfying process. Lausanne chose the trees and included some more unusual nut trees for local people to try.

“We are pleased to be donating these trees. Our team has enjoyed being involved and with the spring sunshine creeping in and lockdown restrictions beginning to ease – local residents will undoubtedly see the benefits.

“This is just one of the community and environmental initiatives that KWL is involved with and I am happy that KWL has been able to help.”
