Michael Vining

Where are you from?

I was born and raised in Hull

What did you do before working at KWL?

I started my career as a motor vehicle technician apprentice at Hull City Council with the North Humberside Group Training Association for 4 years.

After that, I was offered a permanent role with the Council and a few years later I gained my NVQ Level 3 in Heavy Vehicle.

When KWL took over the fleet operations, with the enthusiastic attitudes toward training and development, my abilities and knowledge grew even further.
This really excelled my career and my understanding of the various different vehicle systems and ancillary body equipment.

What’s your role at KWL? And what does it involve?

My current role within KWL Fleet is part of the supervisory team.

This involves all the different aspects of assisting the workshop manager in making sure the technical staff are maintaining the large fleet of vehicles to a high standard. And making sure all Health and Safety and safe working practices are adhered to.

Timescale demand is very high. I believe I have the right attitude to help progress fleet into the future in a positive direction. And with the skills and knowledge I have gained in my career, help and assist the technical team with their personal progression while giving the support they need.

My skills and attributes had been well recognised by the supervisory team and management staff within KWL Fleet, and my positive, friendly, hardworking nature has led me to progress my career to the next level.

What qualifications have you achieved?

I’ve achieved NVQ Level 2 in Light Vehicle Repair, and NVQ Level 3 in Heavy Vehicle Repair.

I also have my IMI Level 3 in Automotive Refrigerant Handling. I’m a VOSA Nominated Tester for class 3, 4, 5, and 7 types of vehicles too.

Recently, KWL has invested in the fleet team to be IRTEC Qualified in Large Commercial Vehicle Inspections. This is a highly recognised standard within the vehicle maintenance industry.

I’ve also built up a vast amount of training and qualification certificates during my employment history. These include various manufacturer specific courses on a lot of the different equipment on our fleet vehicles.

I’ve been fortunate enough to attend a Managing Safely IOSH Health and Safety course, which gave me an insight into some of the Health and Safety needs within a business.
