How long have you worked for KWL?
I joined KWL in 2007 with a remit to bring a private sector commercial input to the organisation. At that point KWL had been freshly created out of Hull City Council Building Services.
The challenge was to take a council department with over 200 employees, from a standing start, and transform it into a standalone corporate unit delivering value for money services.
What’s your role at KWL?
My role is primarily to inform the strategic direction of the business, and to make sure that the strategy is implemented. The business now has a workforce of nearly 500, and has diversified to include fleet management and street lighting repairs and maintenance.
What do you enjoy most about working at KWL?
One of the cornerstones of the business is the focus we place on the local economy.
Over 95% of the workforce resides in an HU post code and the business has to date trained over 100 apprentices on full three or four year schemes.
Over 85% of the apprentices stay with the business when they qualify.
It is growing the business whilst employing and training local people, that provides the most satisfaction.
What qualifications and experience do you have?
A qualified chartered accountant (ACA), I’ve worked in the construction industry and allied trades for over 20 years.
