Ruby Arro – Paving Her Way in Quantity Surveying

Today, we’re shining the spotlight on Ruby Arro, Quantity Surveying Apprentice who joined us in September.

Ruby’s journey to KWL is a testament to her passion for mathematics and her drive to succeed. A recent graduate from Wolfreton School, Ruby achieved impressive A-level results in Maths, English Language, and Geography. “I love maths,” Ruby shares. “It was hard studying, but I put loads of effort in and got what I wanted.”

When it came to choosing her career path, Ruby was drawn to the world of construction. With family members already in the industry, she was encouraged to explore opportunities in this field. The Quantity Surveying role at KWL caught her eye as a perfect blend of her mathematical skills and interest in construction.

Ruby is currently pursuing a degree apprenticeship

Starting with a Level 4 qualification as a Quantity Surveying Technician before progressing to Level 6 at university. She’s attending Sheffield College, giving her the best of both worlds – the excitement of university life in a new city and the practical experience of a job with a salary. “It takes 6 years altogether,” Ruby explains, “but I’ll finish with no debt as KWL pays for all training and expenses.”

Quantity Surveyor

The role of a Quantity Surveyor, as Ruby describes it, is “to maximise the commercial aspects of a project and to control the cost. If variations happen on site, I have to evaluate the difference and make sure that the price is the price.” Her work takes her all around KWL, from the main office to various construction sites, where she’s currently involved in an exciting new project – soon to be announced.

Ruby’s position at KWL is highly sought after. “These jobs are few and far between,” she notes. “I feel really fortunate to get it.” She now supports two other Quantity Surveyors and the Commercial Manager, gaining valuable experience across different aspects of the role.

Tendering and Procurement

At college, Ruby is currently studying tendering and procurement. She sees her role as not just a job, but as a life skill. “The role is about being savvy with money, so it’s a skill I can apply in my personal life too,” she reflects.

Looking to the future, Ruby sees great potential in her career at KWL. “It feels like a family, everyone is very welcoming, and I’m really happy here. In the future I’d like to be able to pass my knowledge on to other young people.”

Outside of work, Ruby enjoys going to the gym and spending time with her family, especially shopping trips with her Grandma. She’s been driving since she was 17, which gives her added independence.

Ruby’s story is a shining example of how young talent can thrive in the construction industry. Her ambition, coupled with KWL’s commitment to nurturing new talent, promises a bright future ahead. We’re proud to have Ruby on our team and look forward to supporting her growth in the years to come.
