A Third-Year Plumbing and Gas Engineering Apprentice Making Waves at KWL

Tommy Pendergast, a third-year plumbing and gas engineering apprentice at KWL, was recently shortlisted for an award at the Hull College Future Stars awards ceremony. Despite not securing the top spot, Tommy’s journey from school to becoming a promising apprentice is a testament to his dedication and passion for his chosen field.

KWL Felt Like the Right Fit

Having been at Kelvin Hall School before joining KWL, Tommy’s decision to pursue an apprenticeship in plumbing and gas engineering was influenced by recommendations from friends and family who had seen the positions promoted on social media. From the start, KWL felt like the right fit for Tommy, who was actively seeking an apprenticeship in plumbing.

Tommy excelled in school, with his favourite subjects being sport, PE, and English. However, he knew he wanted a hands-on role, leading him to explore apprenticeship opportunities. Tommy not only dedicates himself to his apprenticeship but also finds time for his interests, including playing football, hitting the gym, and spending quality time with his girlfriend and family.

Promising Pathway

Expressing a desire to stay with KWL long-term, Tommy sees a promising pathway with numerous opportunities ahead. He is really enjoying the apprenticeship but also values the potential for growth and development within the organisation.

Hull College Future Stars

The recent Hull College Future Stars awards ceremony saw Tommy nominated for Apprentice of the Year. The event featured nominees from four trades, as well as business and marketing, all representing different employers. Tommy admitted feeling a bit nervous, a rare occurrence for him, but standing in front of everyone present was a nerve-wracking experience. Being the runner-up for Apprentice of the Year was a significant achievement. Tommy was nominated as a positive role model for other apprentices, a recognition that speaks volumes about his dedication and professionalism.

Problem Solving – Quick Learner

Tommy’s supervisors, Chris Long and Chris Spicer, nominated him for the award, praising his exceptional skills, dedication, and enthusiasm. Highlighting Tommy’s quick learning abilities and the mastery of various tasks, including installing water supplies at Hull Fair. Tommy’s creativity, problem-solving skills, and initiative were commended, along with his positive relationships with colleagues, managers, and customers.
